Lustre is the name for the shininess of a pearl. We believe that it doesn’t matter if pearls are big, small, white or blue, so long as they have fabulous, iridescent lustre, they will make beautiful pearl jewellery.
We guarantee that our pearls have ‘Excellent Lustre’, this is the highest level attainable in the pearl grading system used by the Gemological Institute of America, the world’s foremost authority in gemstone grading.
One of the beauties of working with pearls is that they’re grown by living oysters and mussels rather than machines, this results in wonderfully diverse harvests, producing pearls in a multitude of shapes, sizes and colours. However this does also mean that a large number of pearls are flawed, with big cracks or ugly brown lumps.
We guarantee that none of our pearls will have these unsightly blemishes.
We individually knot all of our strung pearl jewellery. This protects the pearls from rubbing together which would otherwise scratch them. It also ensures that only one pearl can be lost if the silk breaks.
We always string our pearls on silk because it’s strong and the knots remain tight for longer than polyester thread.
As a part of our guarantee we offer to restring our silk strung pieces for free after two years. This is around the time that silk can become stretched if the pearls have been worn regularly and so if you send them to us after two years and the pearls need restringing our workshop will carry out the work for free.
The quality of our pearls deserves precious metals, you won’t find any base metals in Jersey Pearl jewellery. We also rhodium or 24kt gold plate our sterling silver which prevents the silver from tarnishing. Tarnished silver can permanently stain pearls black which is why the plating is so important.
Another good thing about rhodium plating is that it protects those with sensitive skin from reacting to the silver, it also gives the metal a fabulous, bright white finish.
The oysters and mussels that grow pearls are ancient, sensitive creatures. Environmental conditions such as pollution or temperature changes can upset them, resulting in poor quality pearls or even lost harvests. Pearl farmers therefore go to great lengths to protect the environment around their farms which has the wonderful side effect of creating areas of incredible natural beauty and biodiversity.
In short, pearl farming is great for the environment, but, climate change is threatening pearl growing oysters. We therefore work with The CarbonNeutral® Company to offset the carbon footprint of our pearls by investing in green hydro-electric facilities in Chinese rivers (where a lot of our pearls come from...).
For over twenty five years we’ve been lucky enough to work with and visit hundreds of pearl farmers across the world, from Japan and Thailand to China and Australia. This has helped us get to know the incredible farmers who grow our pearls and ensure that we source our pearls from the farmers rather than having to pay a middle man. It’s also helped us to keep abreast of new developments in the pearl industry.
